The General Assembly (GA) was established in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations and met for its inaugural session in 1946. GA1, also known as the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) , is the first committee out of a total of six that fall under the General Assembly. DISEC as outlined by article 11 of the UN charter, deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community and it seeks out solutions to challenges in the international security regime. The United Nations Disarmament Commission and the Conference on Disarmament aid the DISEC in activities of capacity building and policy implementation.

From weapons of mass destruction to the militarization of outer space, DISEC seeks to promote wide-ranging multilateral cooperation in order to address all global security challenges within the scope of the United Nations Charter. By uniting all Member-States around common high-stake topics, DISEC not only embodies the UN’s core values of inclusivity, diversity, and dialogue but also emphasizes the United Nations’ commitment to finding comprehensive and diplomatic solutions to world issues.

Alongside its general debate, DISEC also harbors thematic discussions on the following clusters,

o Disarmament of Nuclear Weapons and Control of Fissile Material

o Outer space disarmament

o Conventional weaponry

o Regional security and disarmament

o Disarmament mechanisms

Even though its mandate is limited to recommendations, it has proven to be one of the most influential bodies in the United Nations, and these non-legally binding resolutions will be passed once viewed over by UNSC.

The aim of implementing DISEC at SLMUN 2021 is to provide an arena for delegates to speak up and engage in influential debate about international discourse. Coupled with a large number of delegates, this committee is bound to be filled with participants of varying degrees of experience and backgrounds. Therefore, DISEC is for delegates of any and all levels of experience. Whether you are just dipping your toes into the world of MUN or you consider yourself a MUN veteran, this committee is bound to be enthralling and stimulating because of its prioritization of diverse dialogue and inclusivity, that pays homage to the core essence of the United Nations itself.

DISEC at SLMUN 2021, is guaranteed to give an inside look at the issues that need to be dissolved to ensure international cohesion and safety. Therefore delegates who participate in this committee will be among the influential group of youth that will invoke vital discussions and will contribute to the sustenance of international discourse as a whole.
